How to Use & Care for Your Brushes

A good haircare routine doesn't need to be complicated. These are some of the simple brushing and brush-care habits I share as a hairdresser — and use in everyday life.

How to detangle gently

  1. Separate the hair. Work with manageable sections rather than pulling through the whole head at once.
  2. Start at the ends. Gently loosen the lowest knots before moving upwards towards the roots.
  3. Support the hair. Holding the section just above the knot can help limit pulling at the scalp.
  4. Use the right tool. Choose a brush or wide-tooth comb for the hair type and whether the hair is wet or dry.
  5. Take your time. If there's resistance, stop and work through the tangle carefully rather than forcing the brush.

Brushing wet hair

Wet hair can be more fragile. Use small sections and light pressure, and consider a dedicated Wet Detangling Brush or an appropriate wide-tooth comb. Follow any product-specific instructions for use around water.

Cleaning your brush

  1. Remove loose hair from the bristles regularly, using your fingers or a suitable brush-cleaning tool.
  2. Check the care instructions for your particular brush before washing.
  3. For a brush suitable for gentle cleaning, use the recommended method rather than excessive scrubbing.
  4. Allow it to dry fully as directed before storing or using again.

Important: Don't soak cushioned brushes, wooden components or natural-bristle brushes unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically allow it. Too much water can damage certain brush designs.

How to store your hair tools

Keep brushes in a clean, dry place. Avoid crushing bristles in an overfilled bag, and inspect brushes periodically for rough or damaged bristles and loose parts. Replace a tool if it becomes uncomfortable or damaged.

How to gently work through knots

Start with the ends, hold the section above the knot and work towards the roots a little at a time. Never force the brush through a stubborn tangle.
